Nutritional Showdown: Brown Rice vs. White Rice

April 16, 2019
Nutrition

Rice is a staple food for millions of people around the world, so it’s no wonder there are so many questions around whether brown or white rice is recommended.

As a whole grain, brown rice provides more protein, fibre, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E and potassium than white rice or other refined carbohydrates.

White rice has a more familiar taste and texture and is a common ingredient in many dishes, however it lacks a lot of beneficial nutrients such as those listed above.

Choosing whole grains more often can help you feel more full, maintain regular bowel movements (thanks fibre!) and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

If you aren’t 100% on the brown rice train, try to gradually introduce it into your diet. Mixing ½ white and ½ brown rice will help you ease into the slightly different texture of the nutrient dense option.
