Does Nutrition Make a Difference in Nail Health?

There are many supplements that are marketed to target nail health, but how legitimate are these products and what can we eat that will strengthen our nails on their own?

Healthy nails are smooth and of consistent colour. However, splits, ridges, white lines or brittleness may occur and it is likely due to aging or damage/injury to the nail. Don’t worry- these changes should grow out as the nail gets longer.

Are there preventative measures that can be taken?

Unfortunately, there is not enough scientific research/evidence around the use of specific supplements to improve the strength of nails.

Your diet can have an effect on the health of your nails if you consume inadequate amounts of vitamin B12, protein, iron or selenium. Thankfully, these conditions are very rare in Canada. Aiming for a source of lean protein and a variety of nutrients (think: ½ plate fruit & vegetables, ¼ plate protein and ¼ plate carbohydrates) at each meal will be sufficient in promoting healthy nails.

Unless you are told by your doctor that you have a specific vitamin or mineral deficiency, you do not need to change your diet or take supplements.
