Should You Do a Detox/Cleanse?

Detoxes and juice cleanses are becoming increasingly popular in the media with promises to rid you of body toxins, improve energy levels and drop weight fast! Although this sounds appealing to some who are looking for a quick and easy fix, often times these approaches can result in the exact opposite of what you may have hoped for.

Detox diets tend to be very restrictive, protein deficient and low in calories (and thus, low in energy for the body). These factors can cause extreme fluctuations in blood sugar levels, mood changes and digestive discomfort. It can also lead some individuals to a negative cycle of restricting and overeating.

So how can we get rid of these “toxins” that build up in our body? Thankfully, we are already well equipped for this! Our kidneys, liver, lungs and skin all play major roles in eliminating any substance or waste that our body does not need, and they’re pretty good at their jobs!

𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞: Leave the detoxing to our built in systems (kidneys, liver, lungs and skin) and aim for a balanced diet to provide you with the energy that you need.
